Manufacturing is one area where the Internet of Things is making huge strides, but not necessarily in a way that the public will notice

Manufacturing Global has released its list of the Top 10 Manufacturing Trends, and the Internet of Things made the list for the second year in a row. Jason Hope, futurist from Scottsdale, Arizona and advocate for the development of the Internet of Things, is not surprised about this.

In the 2015 list Top 10: Manufacturing Trends 2015, Abigail Phillips (@AbbyPhillips89) of Manufacturing Global indicated the Internet of Things was the first item listed on the list of top trends. Interestingly, it was not the only tech-related item on the list. Other factors on the February 5 publication included social media, additive manufacturing, nanotech and increasing flexibility in the industry. In the 2014 list, the Internet of Things was number three, as this technology was just beginning to hit the manufacturing field.

According to the 2015 list, it’s the machine to machine communication provided by the Internet of Things that makes it so appealing in manufacturing. Today, manufacturing centers can reduce down time by using “smart” machines that communicate repair needs quickly, decrease waste by allowing machines to communicate with each other and decrease errors by eliminating some of the human input into the process. The end result is a manufacturing industry that works more effectively and efficiently. Add in the presence of big data allowed by the Internet of Things, and you have excellent potential for improvement.

“Manufacturing is one area where the Internet of Things is making huge strides, but not necessarily in a way that the public will notice,” said Jason Hope. “Machines are getting smarter, communicating with each other and making products more efficiently, and few people are aware of the changes.”
